An Air Purifier to Help Kill Viruses

Since we spend most of our time in our homes and workplaces, it’s becoming more and more important to make sure our homes and businesses have clean, filtered air. With the recent COVID-19 situation, many people are looking for methods to help ensure their environment is free from pollutants, irritants, and specifically viruses.

In this post we want to share some encouraging information with you regarding an air purification system made by Carrier.

Carrier’s Infinity Whole Home Air Purifier

Carrier has been producing top-notch indoor air quality products for years. One of Carrier’s top products, the Infinity® air purifier, can provide healthier indoor environments for both homes and businesses. Families can have added peace of mind that their loved ones have a cleaner and healthier home in which to live, learn, work and play.

According to Carrier, their Infinity® air purifier has been proven to inactivate 99% of select viruses that are trapped on the filter, including the coronavirus.

Third Party Testing

Recent testing done at the University of Colorado Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering found that the Carrier® Infinity® air purifier inactivates 99% of coronavirus trapped on the filter. The University of Colorado’s testing was conducted with a murine coronavirus that is closely related to the human coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19. This murine pathogen surrogate allowed testing to be completed safely.

Other third-party testing also found that Carrier’s Captures & Kills® technology inactivates 99% of select viruses and bacteria trapped on the filter, such as a common cold virus surrogate, Streptococcus pyogenes and human influenza.

How Does it Work?

According to Carrier, their Infinity® air purifier treats the air flowing through an HVAC system’s air handler using a three-step, charge/capture/kill process:

  • Charge – the purifier creates a “cloud” of electrically charged ions that attach themselves to airborne dust, pollen, viruses, germs, and other particles as they pass through.
  • Capture – the ionized particles are pulled toward an oppositely charged, pleated MERV 15 rated filter and captured at an extremely high rate, similar to how a magnet attracts metal shavings.
  • Kill – captured airborne microbes remain on the pleated filter instead of recirculating back into the home and are subjected to an intense electrical field. There, 99% of select viruses and bacteria are inactivated.

You can learn more about the science at Carrier’s website.

How Do You Get This Air Purifier?

In order to get the Infinity® air purifier for your home or business, you have to go through a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer. In most cities, there is usually a heating and air company that is a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer. These dealers can order, deliver, and install the Infinity® air purifier within your current HVAC system. And don’t worry, Carrier’s air purifier is compatible with most forced air HVAC systems – even those made by manufacturers other than Carrier.
