What is the Air Conditioner Compressor’s Job?

The air conditioner compressor is meant to create the cool air that is forced into the area to be cooled (i.e. home or business). It compresses the refrigerant and sends it to the condenser. If the air conditioner’s outside compressor is not running or doing it’s job, the air conditioner is out of service. It cannot produce the cool air needed without a properly working compressor.

What Causes the Air Conditioner Compressor to Stop Running?

Normally, the first thought that comes to mind is that the compressor has gone bad entirely. That can be an expensive fix, but in most cases there is usually an underlying factor. These factors can range from a bad capacitor, a bad start relay, a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker, a failing condensing fan motor and so on. Thankfully, many of these can be relatively cheap and easy fixes.

Changing a capacitor is one of the cheapest repairs for an ac unit. The same can be said for replacing a relay or a fuse. So, although having an issue with the compressor might sound scary initially, it usually can be fixed at minimal cost.

What if the Air Conditioner Compressor Has Gone Bad Entirely?

If the compressor has actually gone bad and needs to be replaced, then there is a decision to be made. Replacing the ac compressor can be an expensive repair.
