Try These 10 Creative Ways to Improve Your Indoor Air Quality

The quality of the air inside your home can determine how you feel both physically and mentally. Poor indoor air quality can increase allergy symptoms, cause frequent headaches and make you feel fatigued. Luckily, there are many creative ways to improve your indoor air quality.

1. Invest in House Plants

Add some attractive greenery to your home, and improve your indoor air quality at the same time. There are several varieties of plants that can remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other contaminants from your air. They include spider plants, ivy, aloe and peace lilies.

2. Use UV-C Light

You can have a UV light added onto your HVAC system. Exposing things like bacteria, viruses and mold spores to UV-C light will destroy their cellular structure.

3. Make Your Own Cleaning Products

Instead of using chemical-based cleaning products in your residence, make your own using safe and basic ingredients you probably already have. You can mix equal parts of white vinegar and water for a multipurpose solution. A little bit of baking soda on a scrub brush is all you need for the bottoms of tubs and showers.

4. Consider Green Building Materials

If you’re going to have renovation work done in your home soon, consider the type of building materials being used. Many of these products contain harmful chemicals that will off-gas for years to come. Choose recycled or green materials that are made from natural and safe sources.

5. Control Indoor Humidity

In addition to utilizing filtration to improve indoor air quality, control relative humidity indoors so that it is between 35% and 50%. Humid air can easily hold onto particulate matter. You can remove moisture using a whole-house dehumidification unit that is installed onto your HVAC system.

6. Whole-House Air Filtration

Ditch the portable air purifiers, and have a whole-house filtration unit installed onto your HVAC system. These units use enhanced filtration and run when heating or cooling equipment is running.

7. Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems

Dedicated outdoor air systems, or DOAS for short, can pretreat the air coming into your home using filtration, dehumidification and energy recovery. The treated air then mixes with interior air.

8. Photocatalytic Coatings on Surfaces

You can use photocatalytic coatings on walls and other surfaces to oxidize and neutralize chemicals. These coatings usually contain titanium dioxide.

9. Utilize Smart Sensors

You can install smart sensors throughout your residence to help you monitor your indoor air quality in real time. This allows you to adjust your ventilation, purification and other IAQ-controlling devices based on the data.

10. Upgrade to a Smart Thermostat

Smart thermostats often have built-in air quality sensors. Manually or automatically adjust your air quality equipment remotely using your smart thermostat.
