Furnace Making High Pitched Noise

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could know ahead of time before something catastrophic happens to our heating systems? Well, in most cases we can! One of the most helpful red flags or alarms your furnace can give you are those out of the ordinary noises. Like a vehicle or any other mechanically driven system, strange noises are often a sign that something is wrong that needs to be addressed. These are warning signs that there is probably a part that needs to be serviced, repaired, or replaced. If these issues are noticed and fixed soon enough, you will save money on possible furnace repair costs and the amount of time that the furnace is out of commission.

In this post I’m going to go over high pitched noises particularly. If your furnace is making a high pitched noise, it’s probably one of two issues.

Furnace Making Squealing Noise

If a furnace is making a squealing noise, it’s normally an issue with the blower belt or the blower motor. A blower belt that is worn out or fraying will make a high pitched squealing noise as it makes it’s rotations. It could also be the fact that the belt is simply loose and needs to be adjusted. Visually inspecting the belt will help determine if the belt is the issue or not.

Now, it’s important to note that your furnace might not even have a belt. Many of the newer furnace blower systems are now direct-driven rather than belt-driven. If your furnace doesn’t have a belt driving the blower, then the issue is probably the blower motor bearings which I will discuss next.

The blower motor could also be causing the squealing noise. Inside the blower motor are bearings. These bearings are what take most of the friction and force as the blower motor makes it’s rotations. These bearings wear out over time and have to be replaced. If this is the case, then it is recommended to have a heating and air company handle the job. Special tools and expertise will be needed.

Let’s get into the next possibility.

Furnace Making Scraping Noise

When metal is scraping or rubbing against other metal, a high pitched noise is often the result. With a furnace, this can happen when the blower motor wheel is misaligned, loose, or broken. As the blower motor wheel rotates and spins in this condition, it rubs against the surrounding metal surface creating a high pitched noise in the furnace. A certified HVAC technician can adjust or repair the blower motor wheel if this is the case.
