Ductless Mini Split Systems

Ductless Mini Split Systems

Ductless mini split systems, also known as ductless mini splits, are becoming more and more popular in the US. They are known for their high-efficiency, flexibility and ease of installation, among other things.

What is a Ductless Mini Split?

A ductless mini split system is a simplified form of a standard heating and air system. The two main options are ductless mini split heat pumps and ductless mini split air conditioners. A typical system contains an outdoor unit along with wires and piping that connects to the indoor unit(s).

How Do They Work?

On a mini split air conditioner, the indoor unit(s), usually referred to as the evaporator, extracts warm air from inside the home or business and runs it over the evaporator coils within. The cold refrigerant in these evaporator coils retains the heat from the warm air and transfers that heat to the outdoor condenser unit through piping. During this process the indoor unit is delivering the remaining cool air into the area being cooled. The heat that was transferred out of the area to be cooled is then removed to the outside air via the outdoor condenser unit. This process is repeated over and over again. That’s how air conditioning works in it’s simplest form.

High Efficiency

Ductless mini splits are typically more efficient than standard central heating and air conditioning systems. One of the reasons is in the name: they are ductless. Standard central heating and air systems usually lose a percentage of the cooled or heated air during the delivery process to the area being cooled or heated. With a ductless system, there is no heat or cooling lost during the delivery process. Air is only moved in the space that it is required. This will certainly save money on the energy bill.

Ductless mini splits can have a SEER rating as high as 38 SEER. A traditional heating and air system cannot match this SEER rating, making ductless systems more efficient than traditional systems.

Flexibility

Another advantage that affects efficiency and the energy bill is the multi zone option. Each zone, or room for example, has it’s own evaporator/blower unit. This means that each room or zone can have it’s own thermostat. Therefore, each zone can be set to a specific temperature instead of the entire house or building being set to one set temperature. So, if there is a zone that isn’t being occupied or used, that corresponding thermostat can be turned off so that energy isn’t wasted in that zone.

Ease of Use

Installing ductless mini split systems is an easier job than installing a standard traditional heating and air system. The ductless mini split installation process, as stated earlier, completely removes the ductwork aspect. Connecting wiring and piping between the outdoor unit and indoor unit(s) is all that is required via a 3 inch hole in the wall. The piping simply transfers the refrigerant from the outside unit to the inside unit and the wiring supplies the power and communication with the units. That’s it!
